A Talk on Cooperatives

Cooperatives take many forms, and exist at many scales, but they are uniformly bound by principles of shared ownership and democratic governance. They are groups of people who join together to meet common social, cultural, and economic needs. Over the last two years, artist Emma Hedditch has been researching cooperatives, as well as exploring the application of this model within the field of art, working with others in study groups and performances. Emma’s work since the late 1990s has existed with a constant regard for the values enacted when organizing and interacting with others. Through collectivity and collaboration she has focused on daily practice, materiality, and the sharing of knowledge as political action.

Emma has worked as part of groups and organizations including Cinenova, a feminist film and video distributor (1999–present), The Copenhagen Free University (2001–2008), and No Total, a site for performance and shared learning (2012–present). She has participated in recent exhibitions including Finesse, curated by Leah Pires at The Wallach Art Gallery, New York; and Claim a hand in the field that makes this form foam, at Outpost Gallery, Norwich, U.K.
